Hi Folks!
Does anyone know of anything good to add to henna to make it more conditioning on hair?
I henna'd my hair awhile ago, and it seemed like it dried it out a bit, for the first week or so after I henna'd. Or maybe I didn't wash it out well enough?
I've been wanting to henna my hair again, in hopes that it would pick up more red this time (also going to leave it on longer). I just ordered some henna to do it, so I'm hoping to do it in the next week or so. In the mean time, I've started swimming. The pool I'm going to is pretty heavily chlorinated, and it REALLY did a number on my hair. Def. going to wear a swim cap when I go back.
But, since henna is supposed to be rather conditioning, I thought I would see if anyone could suggest something to make it even more so, in the hopes that it will help my now frizzy hair. Last time my mix was henna and OJ. Any suggestions on stuff to add or use instead of the OJ?
Thanks!
Wow, that came out really disjointed. o.O Hope you can make sense of my ramblings. If not, let me know and I'll try to clarify. |

| You mix that in with the henna? The oil and/or conditioner doesn't get in the way of the color? Or is that only an issue with henna stain on skin? |

I have not hennaed my hair so i am speaking merely from what i have read on another board but maybe it will be of help :). I know some people who feel henna dried their hair liek to add yogurt to their mix and/or an oil. Also since your swimming to help prolong your color i reccomend a decent oiling before you get in pretty much anything will work oilive, coconut, grapesee, walnut, ect... And you might want to consider doing henna glosses in between your full appliations to keep it vibrant.
As for what to add ive seen people mix lots of things with their henna tea, coffee, wine, grape juice, carrot juice, yogurt, buttermilk, baby food, pretty much if its edible its been tried :p.
Good luck and i hope you get the result your wanting :) |

I wrapped my hair with plastic wrap while the henna was on it. It didn't seem to work very well, though. The plastic wrap didn't want to cooperate. I'm planning to use a cheap shower cap this time. :)
About the swimming: I didn't have any issues with the color in relation to the pool. The color I got from the first time I henna'd was the same before and after I got in the pool, it just WAY dried my hair and made it frizzy and icky. I will be wearing a swim cap in that pool from now on, so no worries about the chlorine getting on my hair again. (Guess I wasn't clear enough in my first post. I'm not worried about the color fading, I'm worried about the pool frying my hair and hoping that the henna re-application will help fix the damage done.) I don't know what you mean by "henna glosses"?
My henna should be arriving today, so I think I will do sample tests using conditioner and egg in the mixes and see what the results are. Hopefully next weekend I'll have time to henna my hair. I will be sure to post before and after pictures. |

I use amla oil ... it works best if you mix the henna a day or so in advance and let the oil really marry with the henna. I never have dry hair if I use amla oil (and it smells great too). Can be found in any Indian grocery store. _________________ Maya

Ohhh oops sorry my mistake. The pool will fade henna just like any hair color and well swim caps and i dont get along :p so i thought id mention oiling if that was part of your problem :). You dont nessicarily need to re-henna if your color i ok you just need some moisture. One of my favorites is a blend of conditioner, honey (glycerine and molassas work too), and aloe vera gel blended together and left on for 30 minutes to 2 hours. If you dont mind hunting for chunkies int he shower banana, yogurt, molassas, and oil or avacado works great too :). The pool chemicals mess with the cuticle of the hair which is what makes it frizzy and tangly using something acidic like conditioner or even vinager in water smoothes the cuticle back down.
Oh and henna glosses are when you mix a few tablespoons (2 - 4) of henna in a base like conditioner or yogurt sometimes alittle oil, apply and let sit for 2 hours or so then wash out as ususal. It gives you the conditioning of a full application plus extra moisture without darkening your overall color. Just be sure to dye release it like you would normally. Hope your application goes well and makes your hair happy :D! |

:) no worries. I was really tired when I wrote my OP, so I'm sure it wasn't clear. I'm actually a bit amazed anyone was able to make sense of it. Guess that's why every one here is awesome.
I do want more color, though. I was planning to re-henna for that anyway, and the timing with the pool just happened to work out.
Thanks for explaining what the gloss was. That's not something I've heard of before. |

I have made many a sleepy posts in need of revisions myself :p lol. No worries about the gloss i was just looking into it for myself. I currently have two toned hair as i try to grow out my natural color. My dyed hair is a dark brown so i thought i might be able to get away with a gloss so i could get the benefits without the full on red. Hope you application goes well and you get the color without the dryness :). |

Well, I ended up running out of time to do test samples, but I did henna my hair this weekend. :)
Mixed it with black tea instead of orange juice, and used a shower cap instead of plastic wrap. Seems to have worked much better than last time, with no drying out.
Didn't have a chance to get pictures yet, but I am really happy with the color. Not exactly sure how to describe it, but I think maybe deep chestnut. And it shines REALLY red in the sun.
I'll try to get a picture today. |
